Inauguration of Second Runway at Cancún Airport

Cancún, Quintana Roo; October 14th, 2009.- Cancún Airport is preparing for the inauguration of its second runway, which will double capacity for takeoffs and landings and is expected to meet forecast demand for the next several decades.

The second runway, measuring 2,800 meters in length, is parallel to the existing one. They are located 1,420 meters apart, which makes it possible to carry out takeoffs and landings on both at the same time. This increases operations capacity to more than 80 takeoffs or landings per hour. Cancún Airport will be the first airport in Mexico with two runways that can be used simultaneously.

The project includes the construction of a taxiway that connects the second runway to the first and to the Airport’s terminal buildings. Planes will taxi across a bridge over the Airport’s main access road for automobile traffic.

As a complement to this project, it was necessary to build a new control tower, which will begin operations at the same time as the second runway. Measuring almost 97 meters, it is the tallest in Latin America and one of the top 20 worldwide.

With this project, ASUR hopes to contribute to economic development in the region and to maintain Cancún’s position at the forefront of airport services in Mexico and Latin America.
