Social Responsibility

SUSTAINABILITY AS A KEY, LONG-TERM STRATEGY

Ensuring the long-term sustainability of our business will benefit all our stakeholders, including our shareholders and employees, and the local communities in the places where we operate.

Besides working in close cooperation with the United Nations Global Compact, at the national, regional (Latin American) and international levels, since 2008 ASUR has been recognised each year as a Socially Responsible Company by the Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (CEMEFI).

ASUR’s initiatives in this area cover the four recognised core concepts of corporate social responsibility:

Quality of life in the workplace

Human resources are among any company’s most valuable assets. With the goal of creating a working environment based on mutual respect, and to have a motivated, more productive workforce, we invest in our employees to develop and diversify the skills that they can bring to bear in their professional activities.

The fundamental responsibilities toward its employees that the company has assumed are:

  • Ensuring decent working conditions in all subsidiaries within the Group
  • Providing reliable, stable sources of work
  • Promoting positive labour relations and consensus-based solutions to any disagreements
  • Guaranteeing total respect for workers’ human rights
  • Ensuring that our facilities adhere to the highest standards of safety in the workplace, to protect the physical wellbeing of our employees

If you would like to know more about the measures that ASUR takes to ensure quality of life for employees, please consult our Annual Sustainability Report at the top of this page.

Enviroment

The most significant environmental risks for our company include climate change, and the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity.

With the aim of reducing its carbon footprint and mitigating other environmental impacts of its operations, the company has implemented a wide range of measures with the following general objectives:

  • To decrease the amount of electricity consumed in the airports, thereby reducing indirect emissions of greenhouse gases
  • To ensure that the airports’ water consumption does not put excessive pressure on the water supplies for local habitats and populations
  • To protect and promote plant and animal biodiversity in the undeveloped areas surrounding the airports
  • To ensure that the waste water discharged and storm water runoff do not constitute a source of pollution for local bodies of water
  • To guarantee the appropriate disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste produced in the airports

All of ASUR’s airports have Environmental Management Systems that establish detailed guidelines and procedures, and are certified under the ISO 14001 programme. Each airport also has valid Environmental Quality Certification issued by the Mexican Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa).

If you would like to know more about the measures that ASUR takes to ensure environment protection, please consult our Annual Sustainability Report at the top of this page.

Community relations

ASUR carries out various programmes through its nine airports to provide support for local communities. These activities are determined and coordinated at the local level, to ensure that they respond to the needs of each community, and can be summarised under the following categories:

  • Donations in cash or in kind to local community organisations and NGOs that promote healthcare, education or services for people with disabilities
  • Participation in local volunteering projects, such as those organised to clean up beaches or to safeguard endangered species
  • Local sporting events, such as the annual race organised at Cancún Airport
  • Cultural events like exhibitions and musical performances

If you would like to know more about the measures that ASUR takes to support local communities, please consult our Annual Sustainability Report at the top of this page.

Business ethics

ASUR has a Code of Ethics based on respect for human rights and ethical business conduct. The Code contains clear guidelines on the standards that employees, executive officers and the members of corporate governance bodies are required to adhere to, and is widely communicated within the company. Our Internal Auditing Department is entrusted with ensuring compliance with the rules in the Code.

The company has established a reporting system, whereby employees, clients or suppliers can inform the Internal Auditing Department of any cases of unethical conduct:

E-mail: cod_conducta@asur.com.mx

Telephone: 01800-280-2787

The investigation of any matters reported is guaranteed to be carried out on a completely impartial basis, and the identity and any information provided by the reporting party will be treated with strict confidentiality.
